Clinical perspectives and trends: Microperimetry as a trial endpoint in retinal disease
Ophthalmologica Feb 13, 2021
Yang Y, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to analyze clinical perspectives and trends of microperimetry as a trial endpoint in retinal disease. Microperimetry has been used widely over the last two decades to classify functional vision under a wide variety of retinal conditions, identifying subtle retinal sensitivity defects that precede visual acuity loss, and monitoring the development of disease over relatively short periods. An analysis of its use to date reveals a simultaneous lack of consensus in test strategy and a wealth of innovative disease and treatment-specific indicators that may show promise as endpoints for clinical trials. Endpoint development trials will certainly be key in order to understand the feasibility of microperimetry as a clinical trial endpoint, but current signs are promising.
