Clinical implementation of self-measured blood pressure monitoring, 2015–2016
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Oct 18, 2018
Jackson SL, et al. - Using 2015 and 2016 DocStyles survey data from 1,590 primary care physicians and nurse practitioners in US outpatient facilities, researchers evaluated self-measured blood pressure monitoring (SMBP)-related clinical practices and provider roles. Using SAS software, version 9.3, all analyses were conducted in 2017. Although provider roles, use of SMBP data, and SMBP-related practices differed, SMBP use was widely reported by outpatient primary care physicians and nurse practitioners in the DocStyles survey. In addition, the investigators identified gaps regarding patient counseling, device validation, and loaner program availability. The authors recommended that, as a part of efforts to improve hypertension control, health-care professionals can encourage increased use of best practices for SMBP, and insurers can incorporate standardization and support of SMBP.
