Clinical features and outcomes in patients with cardiogenic shock complicating acute myocardial infarction: Early vs recent experience with Impella
American Heart Journal Jun 07, 2021
Singh H, Mehta RH, O'Neill W, et al. - Researchers compared patients with acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock (AMICS) treated in the early experience with Impella percutaneous ventricular assist device vs those treated recently, with a focus on clinical characteristics and outcomes. Overall 649 AMICS cases managed with perioperative Impella were included, with 291 patients treated from 2008 to 2014 forming the early experience cohort and 358 patients treated from 2017 to 2019 included in the recent experience cohort. Findings revealed lower unadjusted in-hospital mortality in relation to Impella use for AMICS during recent years, which may indicate better patient selection, earlier device implantation, and improved management algorithms. A thorough knowledge of these factors may inform the development of future treatment protocols.
