Clinical and epidemiological differences in diabetes: A cross-sectional study of the Brazilian population compared with the French GERODIAB cohort
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Feb 06, 2020
Bezerra CB, de Lima Saintrain MV, Lima AOP, et al. - Using the GERODIAB study carried out in France, researchers contrasted the sociodemographic and epidemiological profiles between Brazilian and French older people with T2DM. Participants in the study were 248 T2D patients aged 65+ years [mean age was 73.16 ± 6.4 years] receiving care in a center for integrated diabetes and hypertension care. Nearly all the participants lived at home, 35 had been uneducated and 17 had undergone higher schooling. Most of them (232 older people) have been retired. The two populations varied statistically in peripheral vascular disease, diabetic neuropathy, foot wound, amputation, hypoglycemia, hyperosmolarity, and other intercurrent infections. Most of the variables of medication use differed significantly between Brazilians and the French. The statistically significant variations between the two populations show better conditions among the French candidates, highlighting the significance of the scientific evidence contained in the French study for developing public health actions targeted at Brazilian diabetic older people.
