Clinical and echocardiographic parameters as risk factors for atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with hyperthrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
Clinical Cardiology Aug 23, 2018
Klopotowski M, et al. - Given that, atrial fibrillation is a commonly seen in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and could be a factor for high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, researchers assessed AF prevalence in patients with HCM and identified risk factors for AF. They analyzed clinical and echocardiographic parameters for 546 HCM patients below 65 years. Findings corroborated that AF is a commonly seen complication in patients with HCM. Identified risk factors for AF in this patient population included age ≥ 45 years, past history of presyncope or syncope, non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (nsVT), left atrium diameter during first assessment, left atrium diameter at the last assessment before AF occurrence, and left ventricular ejection fraction at the last assessment before AF occurrence. AF occurrence and its complications could be attenuated by recognizing patients with high risk for AF and by implementing preventive strategies.
