Circulating long noncoding RNA LIPCAR predicts heart failure outcomes in patients without chronic kidney disease

Hypertension Mar 18, 2019

Santer L, et al. - In this study with 234 heart failure (HF) patients (mean age 74 [9.14] years, 50% male) followed for 4.73 (0.24–7.25) years, researchers investigated if the associations of plasma long intergenic noncoding RNA predicting cardiac remodeling (LIPCAR) with left ventricular remodeling and outcomes could be modified by the presence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), defined by an estimated glomerular filtration rate value <60mL/(min·1.73m2). Also, 17 age- and sex-matched controls were included. Findings revealed an independent association of LIPCAR with hospitalization for HF only in non-CKD patients. Overall, in elderly HF patients without CKD, prognostication of outcomes was enabled by plasma LIPCAR. The association of circulating LIPCAR with HF outcomes was modified by CKD.
