Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as a risk factor for suicide: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Respiratory Medicine Apr 03, 2019
Sampaio MS, et al. - The link between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the likelihood of suicide was examined via a systematic review and meta-analysis. The reports published from 2002 to 2015 addressing this topic were identified from the Latin-American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, LIVIVO, Web of Science, and PsychNET databases. To partially capture the “grey literature”, researchers used OpenThesis and OpenGrey. Via a systematized analysis of the references of eligible articles, they also performed a manual search. Low risk of bias was reported in all studies. A total of 1390 suicide cases of COPD patients constituted the overall sample. Five eligible case-control studies were included in the meta-analysis and the findings revealed 1.9 times more chances to commit suicide among COPD patients vs people without COPD.
