Chronic cough in individuals with COPD: A population-based cohort study
Chest Jan 31, 2020
Landt E, Çolak Y, Lange P, et al. - Whether comorbid chronic cough represents a marker of disease severity in people with COPD, was investigated in this study. In a nested cohort of 43,271 adults from the Copenhagen General Population Study, a record of respiratory symptoms, healthcare utilizations, lung function, and inflammatory biomarkers in blood was maintained. Of 43,271 people from the general population, those with COPD were 8,181 (19%), and of those, 796 (10%) had chronic cough. Experts noted that people suffering from COPD and chronic cough exhibited a Leicester Cough Questionnaire median total score of 17.7, corresponding to 5.9, 5.6, and 6.3 for the physical domain, psychological domain, and for the social domain, respectively. In COPD patients, comorbid chronic cough was found to be related to more severe disease in terms of more respiratory symptoms and healthcare use, lower lung function, and increased inflammation in the blood.
