Characteristics and patient pathways of Lyme disease patients: A retrospective analysis of hospital episode data in England and Wales (1998–2015)

BMC Public Health Aug 22, 2019

Tulloch JSP, et al. - Using two administrative hospital datasets (HES [Hospital Episode Statistics] and PEDW [Patient Episode Database for Wales]), researchers explored the demographic features of Lyme disease patients. They also described patient pathways. Overall 2,361 patients were coded with Lyme disease within HES and PEDW. In 1998, the incidence was 0.08 cases/100,000 and in 2015, it was 0.53 cases/100,000; showing a significant increase in incidence. An annual peak of new cases was seen in August, with higher incidence rates in southern central and western England. Most cases included within hospital admission data (n = 2,066) were either referrals from primary care (28.8%, n = 596) or admissions via accident and emergency (A&E) (29.5%, n = 610). For symptoms associated with Lyme disease, recommended care pathways were poorly understood by the general population, as indicated by this population entering secondary care through A&E.
