Characteristics and clinical significance of myocardial injury in patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019

European Heart Journal May 14, 2020

Shi S, Qin M, Cai Y, et al. - Researchers examined the characteristics and clinical significance of myocardial injury in 671 patients with severe COVID-19 who were hospitalized from January 1 to February 23, 2020; median age of patients was 63 years. They collected clinical, laboratory, and treatment data and compared them between patients who died and survivors. Death was reported for 62 patients (9.2%), who more often had myocardial injury (75.8% vs 9.7%) than survivors. For in-hospital death, the single cut-off point and high level of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) were predictive. The multivariable logistic regression revealed the following as predictors of myocardial injury: senior age, comorbidities (e.g. hypertension, coronary heart disease, chronic renal failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and high level of C-reactive protein.
