Changes in right ventricle function after mitral valve repair surgery
Heart, Lung, and Circulation Jul 16, 2019
Orde SR, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers examined patients undergoing mitral valve (MV) repair to evaluate perioperative right ventricular (RV) systolic function in these subjects and to further compare minimally invasive robotic-assisted mitral valve repair (MIMVr) vs standard “open” MV repair (MVr). RV function was evaluated via speckle tracking (RV free wall strain) used as a sensitive echocardiography method. They found that following MV repair, the development of RV systolic dysfunction was commonly seen. Less pronounced deterioration in RV contraction was observed after MIMVr, compared with MVr. Findings also revealed a link between deterioration in RV contraction and enhanced RV functional recovery at 1 year, though not to preoperative levels. This could potentially be related to clinical functional improvement.
