Changes in comorbidities, diagnoses, therapies and outcomes in a contemporary cardiac intensive care unit population
American Heart Journal Jun 08, 2019
Jentzer JC, et al. - In a contemporary cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) population (n=12,418, mean age 67.6 years, 37.7% were females), researchers analyzed the temporal alterations in comorbidities, illness severity, diagnoses, procedures, and adjusted mortality seen in recent years. They found that the prevalence of non-coronary cardiovascular diseases, critical care diagnoses, and organ failure increased in recent years. Increased utilization of various CICU therapies and procedures, including mechanical ventilation, invasive lines and vasoactive drugs, has been reported in the CICU population over time. Among the subgroup of patients with and without a critical care discharge diagnosis, adjusted hospital mortality showed a temporal reduction.
