Cause of death among HIV patients in London in 2016
HIV Medicine Jul 11, 2019
Croxford S, et al. - In order to lower preventable mortality, yearly reviews of deaths among people with HIV are conducted by the London HIV Mortality Review Group since 2013, and data on patient deaths in 2016 were reported by all London HIV care Trusts in 2017. Deaths of 206 patients were reported. The analysis revealed most of the deaths were attributable to non-AIDS-related conditions; most of the patients were on antiretroviral therapy (81%) and were virally suppressed. Tobacco smoking (37%), excessive alcohol consumption (19%), non-injecting drug use (10%), injecting drug use (7%) and opioid substitution therapy (6%) were identified to be the risk factors in the year before death. A history of depression was reported in 39%, chronic hypertension was reported in 33%, dyslipidemia in 27%, coinfection with hepatitis B virus and/or hepatitis C virus in 17%, and diabetes mellitus in 14%.
