Carotid stiffness, extra-media thickness and visceral adiposity in young adults
Atherosclerosis Sep 07, 2017
Lefferts WK, et al. – This study explored the associations between carotid artery stiffness, extra-media thickness (EMT), and visceral adiposity in young, healthy individuals. Findings demonstrated an association of carotid pulsatile pressure (PP) and EMT, but not intima-media thickness (IMT), with carotid β–stiffness and, of carotid PP and visceral adiposity (SAD) with EMT. In addition, carotid PP partially mediated the link between EMT and carotid β–stiffness, and SAD and EMT. Overall, a possible detrimental impact of visceral adiposity on subclinical markers of cardiovascular disease risk (carotid PP, EMT) was indicated, contributing to artery stiffness.
