Carotid plaque with high-risk features in embolic stroke of undetermined source: Systematic review and meta-analysis
Stroke Jan 13, 2020
Kamtchum-Tatuene J, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis involving 323 candidates, researchers desired to know about the frequency of mild carotid stenosis with high-risk features in the embolic stroke of undetermined source via searching Pubmed and Ovid-Embase. Using random-effect meta-analysis, the prevalence of ipsilateral and contralateral mild carotid stenosis with high-risk features was pooled. They defined ipsilateral mild carotid stenosis as a plaque with < 50% luminal narrowing. Eight studies were involved in this investigation. According to results, high-risk plaques in the ipsilateral are five times more prevalent than the contralateral carotid in the embolic stroke of an undetermined source, suggesting a relationship to the risk of stroke.
