Cardiac toxicity in operable esophageal cancer patients treated with or without chemoradiation
American Journal of Clinical Oncology Jul 30, 2019
Witt JS, et al. - In esophageal cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NA CRT) followed by surgery vs surgery alone, researchers assessed factors that could predict cardiac events. The study sample consisted of 123 patients (70 treated with surgery alone and 53 treated with NA CRT). Data revealed that the overall rates of grade ≥3 cardiac events were 24.5% in the NA CRT group vs 10% in the surgery group. A significant increase in the rate of grade ≥3 cardiac events was seen in NA CRT vs surgery alone. Pericardial effusions were anticipated by the V45 Gy, while no dosimetric parameter predicted grade ≥3 cardiac events or survival.
