Cardiac auscultation poorly predicts the presence of valvular heart disease in asymptomatic primary care patients

Heart Sep 02, 2018

Gardezi SKM, et al. - For diagnosing valvular heart disease (VHD) in primary care, researchers assessed the contemporary accuracy of auscultation. Findings suggested a limited accuracy of cardiac auscultation for the detection of VHD in asymptomatic patients. Particularly for overweight subjects, cardiac auscultation was seen to be a poor diagnostic screening tool in primary care. In patients with symptoms suggesting VHD, ensuring easy access to echocardiography likely represents a better diagnostic strategy.
