Carbohydrate restriction in midlife is associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes among Australian women: A cohort study

Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Nov 23, 2019

Rayner J, et al. - Whether there may exist a link between carbohydrate restriction in midlife and risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and whether this link varies by prior gestational diabetes (GDM) diagnosis, was determined in this current investigation. Using validated food frequency questionnaires, evaluation of dietary intake was done for 9,689 women from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health in 2001 (aged 50-55) and 2013 (aged 62-67). By means of a low-carbohydrate diet score (highest quartile (Q4) showing the lowest proportion of energy from carbohydrates), evaluation of average long-term carbohydrate restriction was done. A follow-up of 15 years was performed. Researchers noted lower intake of fruit, cereals and high-fibre bread in relation to carbohydrate restriction, and higher T2DM risk was observed in relation to lower consumptions of these food groups. Findings revealed higher T2DM incidence in middle-aged women in relation to carbohydrate restriction, this was observed irrespective of GDM history. Experts recommended health professionals to suggest women to not consume low-carbohydrate diets that are low in fruit and grains and to eat a diet consistent with current dietary recommendations.
