Cannabis use is associated with increased risk for diabetic ketoacidosis in adults with type 1 diabetes: Findings from the T1D Exchange clinic registry
Diabetes Care Oct 23, 2019
Kinney GL, et al. - In the T1D Exchange clinic registry (T1DX), researchers investigated the frequency of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in cannabis users vs nonusers. In the past 12 months, the link between cannabis use by total substance score for cannabis (TSC) and DKA has been investigated using a logistic regression model adjusted for potential confounders among adults in the T1DX. Of 932 people with type 1 diabetes, 61 had a TSC > 4 that categorized them as moderate users of cannabis. Findings suggested an association of cannabis use with an increased risk for DKA among adults in the T1DX. Providers will educate their clients about the potential risk of DKA with cannabis use.
