Cancer patterns and association with mortality and renal outcomes in non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease: A matched cohort study
BMC Nephrology Oct 31, 2019
Chinnadurai R, et al. - Including 2,952 patients registered in the Salford Kidney Study between October 2002 and December 2016, researchers performed this inquiry focusing on the distribution as well as the link of cancer with mortality, renal progression and renal replacement therapy (RRT) assignment in a non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease (CKD) cohort. They compared 339 patients having a history of cancer (previous and current) with 2,613 patients without cancer at recruitment. From each group, they derived a propensity score matched cohort of 337 patients, which was used for analysis. Findings confirmed cancer status as an added burden as well as an independent risk factor for all-cause death but not for renal progression. Evaluating CKD patients with a past or current history of cancer on a case by case basis in planning for RRT choices was recommended, and the presence of cancer should not be a limitation for RRT provision including transplantation.
