Can the neck contribute to persistent post-concussion symptoms? A prospective descriptive case series
Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy Jun 07, 2019
Kennedy E, et al. - Researchers examined a consecutive series of 20 participants with persistent symptoms following a concussion to ascertain if the neck has also been injured, and estimate the potential for the neck to contribute to their symptoms. Participants were a mean of 7.5 weeks post-concussion (median 5 weeks). On neck assessment, clinician considered 90% to have a neck problem contributing to their current symptoms. They identified multiple findings indicative of concurrent neck injury, particularly involving the upper cervical spine. It is significant to recognise these neck-related findings as they have the potential to contribute to persistent post-concussion symptoms, and may respond to neck treatment.
