C-reactive protein predicts complications in community-associated S. aureus bacteremia: A cohort study
BMC Infectious Diseases Apr 08, 2021
Botheras CL, Bowe SJ, Cowan R, et al. - Via this prospective observational cohort study, researchers aimed at determining the risk factors for complicated Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteremia which would aid clinicians in targeting patients that benefit from expedited investigations and escalated care. The multiple logistic regression model revealed the following factors to be significantly protective against complications: age, hemodialysis, and entry point from a diabetic foot ulcer. Conversely, following factors significantly linked with complications: an unknown entry point of infection, an entry point from an indwelling medical device, and a C-reactive protein concentration of over 161 mg/L on the day of admission.
