Burden of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and shigella non-fatal diarrhoeal infections in 79 low-income and lower middle-income countries: A modelling analysis
The Lancet Global Health Feb 21, 2019
Anderson JD, et al. - In this modelling analysis, researchers quantified the burden of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and shigella by estimating the number of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) lost in children under 5 years of age over 1 year, as well as estimated the burden of stunting caused by these infections in children, focusing on the effect of stunting on increased mortality from other infectious diseases in children. Findings suggested that the expanded effects of non-fatal ETEC and diarrhoeal episodes related to shigella can have lasting consequences. Prevention of these infections could reduce the risk of direct death from other infectious diseases and stunting and death. Understanding the countries and populations with the highest risk of disease helps target the most vulnerable populations.
