The Lancet Global Health Aug 15, 2019
Dhar R, Singh S, Talwar D, et al. - Via the Indian bronchiectasis registry, a multicentre, prospective, observational cohort study of 2,195 adult individuals (≥ 18 years) with CT-confirmed bronchiectasis, researchers explained the features, severity of the disease, microbiology, and treatment of individuals with bronchiectasis in India. The most frequent underlying cause of bronchiectasis former tuberculosis and the most common organism in sputum culture was Pseudomonas aeruginosa in India. Being of the male sex, P aeruginosa infection, a history of pulmonary tuberculosis, modified Medical Research Council Dyspnoea score, daily sputum production, and radiological severity of the disease were the risk factors for aggravations. Low adherence to guideline-recommended care was noted and only 388 and 82 individuals were tested for allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and for immunoglobulins, respectively. Therefore, individuals with bronchiectasis in India had more severe disease and had different features in comparison with reported in other countries. This study gave a benchmark to enhance the quality of care for individuals with bronchiectasis in India.
