Breast cancer diagnostic delays among young mexican women are associated with a lack of suspicion by healthcare providers at first presentation
Journal of Global Oncology Feb 17, 2020
Unger-Saldaña K, et al. - As the literature has insufficient evidence on the correlation between young age and diagnostic delay of breast cancer (BC), researchers here examined if young age raises the risk of diagnostic delays among patients with BC and also investigated the mechanisms through which young age affects diagnostic delay. They conducted a cross-sectional study of 592 patients with symptomatic BC who underwent treatment at two of the largest public cancer hospitals in Mexico City available for the uninsured and those covered by Seguro Popular. The analysis revealed younger participants (40 years of age or younger) to be at an increased risk of diagnostic delays, which appears to be due to an increased risk of lack of cancer suspicion at the first healthcare service consulted.
