Both prediabetes and type 2 diabetes are associated with lower heart rate variability: The Maastricht Study
Diabetes Care Mar 18, 2020
Coopmans C, Zhou TL, Henry RMA, et al. - Researchers determined the link among prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and measures of glycemia and heart rate variability (HRV) in the population-based Maastricht Study with 2,107 participants aged 59 ± 8 years (52% were men). The study sample comprised 1,226 participants with normal glucose metabolism, 331 with prediabetes, and 550 with type 2 diabetes. Experts ascertained 24-h electrocardiogram-derived HRV in time and frequency domains. They employed linear regression with adjustments for age, gender, and major cardiovascular risk factors. Findings revealed an independent link of both prediabetes and type 2 diabetes with lower HRV. This was further substantiated by independent continuous links between measures of hyperglycemia and lower HRV. In prediabetes, the already presence of cardiac autonomic dysfunction was strongly indicated.
