Bisphosphonate and teriparatide use in thoracolumbar spinal fusion: A systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies

Buerba RA, et al. - Authors compared the effectiveness of the use of either bisphosphonates or teriparatide on radiographic and functional outcomes of patients that had thoracolumbar spinal fusion. Compared to controls, successful spinal fusion was not seen to be impaired with the bisphosphonates nonetheless teriparatide use is correlated with higher fusion rates than bisphosphonates. Moreover, findings suggested an association of bisphosphonate use with decreased odds of cage subsidence and vertebral fractures vs controls that had spinal fusion.
