Baseline characteristics associated to improvement of patients with COPD in physical activity in daily life level after pulmonary rehabilitation
Respiratory Medicine Apr 13, 2019
Gulart AA, et al. - Among 53 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (FEV1:38.3; 95%CI 34.4 to 42.2%pred), researchers compared baseline features between achievers and not achievers of minimal important difference (MID) for the physical activity of daily living (PADL) following pulmonary rehabilitation (RP), as well as determined baseline variables that allow better prediction of the change. They also intended to define a cut-off point to distinguish MID achievers and not achievers. They found improved PADL level among patients who demonstrated worse lung function, functional capacity and lower PADL level before RP. This change was better predicted by energy expenditure (EE) walking and time on PADL<1.5MET. The patients having higher probabilities of improving the PADL level could be identified with the help of the cut-off point of 6525 steps.
