Atrial fibrillation, not atrial cardiopathy, is associated with stroke: A single center retrospective study
Journal of the Neurological Sciences Jun 18, 2019
Affan M, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective analysis to comprehend the relative importance of left atrial enlargement (LAE) and atrial fibrillation (AF) as risk factors for stroke. The study sample consisted of all patients who had echocardiography within the Henry Ford Health System between March and September 2016. They included a total of 8679 cases (mean age was 65 ± 17 years), 54% were female, 41% were African-American. Structural LAE has an important connection with AF, discovered in nearly half of this population. While AF has been confirmed to have a significant association with the previous stroke, no association was found between stroke and LAE. AF, not LAE, seems to be the real stroke-related atrial factor.
