Atrial fibrillation is associated with mortality in intermediate surgical risk patients with severe aortic stenosis: Analyses from the PARTNER 2A and PARTNER S3i trials
Journal of the American Heart Association Mar 31, 2021
Brener MI, George I, Kosmidou I, et al. - Researchers investigated how atrial fibrillation (AF) impacts intermediate surgical risk patients suffering from severe aortic stenosis who receive either transcatheter or surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR). From the PARTNER (Placement of Aortic Transcatheter Valve) 2A or S3i trials, data were evaluated on 2,663 patients. Analyses categorized cases into 3 groups based on baseline and discharge rhythms (ie, sinus rhythm [SR]/SR, SR/AF, or AF/AF). Among patients with intermediate surgical risk aortic stenosis, AF presence at discharge was identified to be related to worse results—particularly in those with baseline SR—including elevated all‐cause mortality at 2‐year follow‐up.
