Associations of self-reported physical activity and depression in 10,000 Irish adults across harmonised datasets: A DEDIPAC-study
BMC Public Health Jul 04, 2018
Mc Dowell CP, et al. - Researchers used the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) and The Mitchelstown Cohort Study databases to examine cross-sectional links between self-reported physical activity (PA) and depressive symptoms and status among Irish adults. Participants were grouped as those who met World Health Organization moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) guidelines or those who did not, and divided into tertiles based on weekly minutes of MVPA. Increased depressive symptoms were indicated by a Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) score of ≥ 16. They found lower odds of elevated depressive symptoms related to meeting the PA guidelines. They also found an association between increased volumes of MVPA and lower odds of elevated depressive symptoms.
