Associations of polypharmacy and inappropriate medications with adverse outcomes in older adults with cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Oncologist Oct 07, 2019
Mohamed MR, Ramsdale E, Loh KP, et al. - Researchers examined the links of polypharmacy (PP) and/or potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) with outcomes in older adults with cancer, via a systematic review. They collected estimates of postoperative results related to PP in this population, via a meta-analysis. They identified studies from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Register of Clinical Trials, that were cohort investigations, cross-sectional researches, meta-analyses, and clinical trials reporting outcomes related to PP and/or PIM and including older adults with cancer. Overall 47 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria. Findings revealed the link of PP with chemotherapy toxicities (4/9 studies), falls (3/3 studies), functional decline (3/3 studies), and overall survival (2/11 studies). In a meta-analysis of 4 studies, a link between PP (≥ 5 medications) and postoperative complications was suggested. In 3 of 11 studies, a link was evident between PIM and adverse outcomes.
