Associations between stressful life events and diabetes: Findings from the China Kadoorie Biobank study of 500,000 adults

Journal of Diabetes Investigation Jun 21, 2019

Wang M, et al. - This investigation draws on data from the China Kadoorie Biobank study to examine the connections between cumulative and specific stressful life events and the prevalence of diabetes in Chinese adults. Participants in the study were approximately 500,000 adults (aged 30–79 years) from 10 diverse regions of China. According to this cross-sectional data, an increased prevalence of diabetes was linked to cumulative and specific stressful life events. In particular, certain work-, family- and personal-related life events, respectively, were significantly related to an increased likelihood of diabetes. After adjusting for potential confounders, such as smoking, body mass index and hypertension, these associations remained significant.
