Association of vitamin D deficiency with electrocardiographic markers of left atrial abnormalities

Annals of Noninvasive Electrocardiology Jan 24, 2019

Anees MA, et al. - In view of the link between electrocardiographic markers of left atrial (LA) abnormalities and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), researchers examined how vitamin D deficiency is related to prolonged P wave duration and PR interval as markers of LA abnormalities. In this analysis of 5,894 participants (58.12 ± 12.9 years; 54.7% women; 49.8% non-Hispanic Whites) without clinical CVD from NHANES III, vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/ml) was correlated with prolonged P wave duration and prolonged PR interval in multivariable logistic regression models adjusted for demographics, CVD risk factors, and other possible confounders. Findings thus suggest an association of vitamin D deficiency with an increased risk of LA abnormalities, illustrating an different pathway through which vitamin D deficiency could increase CVD risk.
