Association of socioeconomic status with ischemic stroke survival
Stroke Dec 07, 2019
Vivanco-Hidalgo RM, et al. - By performing this nationwide population-based cohort study in Catalonia, Spain, researchers determined how survival after ischemic stroke could be influenced by individuals’ socioeconomic status and their Primary Care Service Area Socioeconomic Index. The participants were 16,344 ischemic stroke patients who were followed-up for 24,638 person-years. They found no link between the lowest socioeconomic individual status and short-term survival, although they identified it in patients with <€18 000 income/year. Findings revealed the link of individuals’ socioeconomic status with short- and long-term survival in patients suffering from ischemic stroke. Conversely, only short-term survival was affected by the Primary Care Service Area Socioeconomic Index measures. A small fraction of this link was attributable to variations in comorbidity and cardiovascular risk factors. Short- and long-term survival might be ultimately differently influenced by interventions addressing both individuals’ and primary care service socioeconomic aspects.
