Association of rotavirus vaccines with reduction in rotavirus gastroenteritis in children younger than 5 years: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials and observational studies

JAMA May 14, 2021

Sun ZW, Fu Y, Lu HL, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for assessing the comparative benefit, risk, and immunogenicity of different rotavirus vaccines by synthesizing randomized clinical trials and observational studies. Randomized clinical trials and cohort and case-control studies comprising more than 100 children under the age of 5 that reported on the efficacy, safety, or immunogenicity of rotavirus vaccines were included. The high level of protection and low risk of serious adverse events for rotavirus vaccines in fully vaccinated children underscored the importance of rotavirus vaccination being implemented globally. The similar protection provided by Rotarix and RotaTeq relieves healthcare authorities of the burden of vaccine selection.
