Association of pulmonary hypertension with clinical outcomes of transcatheter mitral valve repair
JAMA Dec 10, 2019
Al-Bawardy R, Vemulapalli S, Thourani VH, et al. - Researchers examined how pulmonary hypertension influence clinical outcomes in patients undergoing transcatheter mitral valve repair via performing this cohort study of 4,071 patients (median age 81 years) in the Society of Thoracic Surgery/American College of Cardiology Transcatheter Valve Therapy Registry. They noted common occurrence of pulmonary hypertension in this cohort. Its occurrence was associated with enhanced mortality and readmissions for heart failure after transcatheter mitral valve repair for severe mitral regurgitation. However, they identified transcatheter mitral valve repair as safe and effective even in patients with severe pulmonary hypertension; the procedure resulted in improved functional capacity among these patients.
