Association of obesity with disease severity among patients with COVID‐19
Obesity May 06, 2020
Kalligeros M, Shehadeh F, Mylona EK, et al. - Researchers sought to determine if obesity and other chronic diseases are correlated with severe outcomes, such as intensive care unit (ICU) admission and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), among cases hospitalized with COVID‐19. They performed assessment of 103 cases who were hospitalized with COVID‐19 from February 17 to April 5. Among these cases, admission to the ICU was reported for 41 cases (39.8%) and IMV was required in 29 (70.7%). The analysis revealed correlation of severe obesity (BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2) with ICU admission, while there was independent correlation of history of heart disease and obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) with the use of IMV. These findings emphasize increased vigilance and aggressive treatment of cases with obesity and COVID‐19.
