Association of hypertension and antihypertensive treatment with COVID-19 mortality: A retrospective observational study
European Heart Journal Jun 10, 2020
Gao C, Cai Y, Zhang K, et al. - Researchers examined how the treatment of hypertension affects the mortality of patients diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) via conducting a retrospective observational study of 2,877 patients who were admitted with COVID-19 to Huo Shen Shan Hospital. Among these patients, 29.5% (850/2877) had a history of hypertension. They observed a significantly higher risk of mortality among patients with a history of hypertension but without antihypertensive treatment (n = 140) vs those with antihypertensive treatments (n = 730). Similar mortality rates were noted between the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitor (4/183) and non-RAAS inhibitor (19/527) cohorts. The findings suggest no harm of RAAS inhibitors in patients infected with COVID-19.
