Association of heart rate with mortality in sinus rhythm and atrial fibrillation in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction
European Journal of Heart Failure Mar 20, 2019
Sartipy U, et al. - Among 9,090 patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) (ejection fraction ≥ 50%) from the Swedish Heart Failure registry, researchers examined the link between atrial fibrillation (AF) and mortality, and the link between resting heart rate (HR) and mortality in both sinus rhythm (SR; n= 4,296 [47%]) and AF (n=4,794 [53%]). All-cause mortality was assessed as an outcome measure. Findings revealed an independent link between AF and all-cause mortality in a large and unselected cohort of patients with HFpEF. In SR, increased mortality was reported in relation to a higher HR. Only during the first years of follow-up, mortality was affected by a higher HR in AF. Over long-term follow-up, convergence in outcomes based on the baseline HR groups was reported in AF.
