Association of global longitudinal strain with status and mortality in chronic heart failure

JAMA Cardiology Apr 15, 2021

Tröbs SO, Prochaska JH, Schwuchow-Thonke S, et al. - Researchers undertook this observational, prospective MyoVasc cohort study to examine the factors related to global longitudinal strain (GLS) and its prognostic worth in patients suffering from chronic heart failure (HF). This study involved 2,186 patients. A median follow-up of 3.2 years (interquartile range, 2.0-4.0 years) was performed. The multivariable regression analysis revealed that an independent link with GLS was demonstrated by factors such as age, female gender, obesity, atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarction, and estimated glomerular filtration rate. Per findings, GLS in chronic HF cases was identified to be related to clinical and cardiac status, and also reflected neurohormonal activation, and displayed a link with cardiac mortality independent of clinical as well as cardiac status. In the light of these observations, experts suggest the likely usefulness of GLS as a tool to improve risk stratification in HF cases.
