Association of famine exposure with the risk of type 2 diabetes: A meta-analysis

Clinical Nutrition Aug 15, 2019

Liu H, Chen X, Shi T, et al. - In this meta-analysis involving 1,609,419 patients, researchers used the pooled relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) to explore the connection between famine exposure and type 2 diabetes (T2D). This investigation involved 24 published articles. In terms of publication year, location, study design, sample size, famine duration and definition of diabetes (criteria), the pooled RRs were different. Compared with adult exposure, individuals who experience fetal, childhood, and adolescent famine were likely to be diabetics in terms of the period of famine exposure. Findings suggested that famine exposure can increase the T2D risk. The hazard can differ with length of famine, diabetes definition, gender and period of famine exposure.
