Association of cardiovascular disease with premature mortality in the United States

JAMA Oct 23, 2019

Chen Y, et al. - Researchers investigated trends in premature (ages 25-64 years) mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the United States from 2000 to 2015 by demographics and county-level factors, including education, rurality, and the prevalence of smoking, obesity, and diabetes. US national mortality data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data set were used and all CVD deaths among individuals ages 25 to 64 years from January 2000 to December 2015 were included. As per findings, much of the US population exhibited substantial declines in premature CVD mortality. However, there was a significant increase in CVD mortality rates among American Indian/Alaska Native individuals age 25 to 49 years; the rates plateaued among white women in the same age group. They identified the strongest association of county-level diabetes prevalence with mortality from CVD. These findings emphasize the significance of identifying groups/characteristics of counties where rates and trends are substantially high for targeted public health interventions.
