Association of ambulatory blood pressure with cardiovascular disease in African American individuals
JAMA Aug 21, 2019
Yano Y, et al. - Researchers examined the association of daytime and nighttime BP measures assessed outside the clinic with cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality among African American individuals. Further, they examined if this association is evident independent of BP levels measured inside the clinic. In this cohort study, they assessed 1,034 African American individuals; 58.9 [10.9] years; 337 [32.6%] male; and 583 [56.4%] taking antihypertensive medication). Outcomes revealed an increased risk for cardiovascular disease events in association with higher daytime and nighttime systolic blood pressures independent of blood pressure levels measured in the clinic. These findings support the utility of daytime and nighttime BP measures assessed in ambulatory monitoring during a 24-hour period in the identification of African American individuals who have increased cardiovascular disease risk.
