Association between use of primary-prevention implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and mortality in patients with heart failure: A prospective propensity score–matched analysis from the Swedish heart failure registry
Circulation Nov 14, 2019
Schrage B, Uijl A, Benson L, et al. - Researchers examined whether implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) use is associated with all-cause mortality in contemporary heart failure with reduced ejection fraction cohort. Further, they sought for relevant subgroups. From the Swedish Heart Failure Registry, they assessed 16,702 eligible patients fulfilling the European Society of Cardiology criteria for primary-prevention ICD. Of these, only 1,599 (10%) had an ICD. This suggests underusing of ICD for primary prevention in the contemporary heart failure with reduced ejection fraction population. ICD implantation was noted to be correlated with reduced short- and long-term all-cause mortality. Across all the investigated subgroups, this association was consistent. Better implementation of ICD therapy in this population is recommended.
