Association between transcatheter aortic valve replacement and early postprocedural stroke
JAMA Jun 22, 2019
Huded CP, et al. - Through a retrospective cohort study based on a US registry of 101,430 patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), researchers assessed the trends of stroke occurring within 30 days post-procedure during the first 5 years TAVR was used in the US, the correlation of stroke with 30-day mortality, and the association of medical therapy with 30-day stroke danger. Twenty-two hundred and ninety patients with a stroke of any kind and 373 patients with transient ischemic attacks were reported on day 30. Among cases of stroke within 30 days, 1,119 strokes happened within the first day and 1,567 within 3 days of TAVR. However, 30-day stroke rates were stable without a trend towards increase or decrease among all patients. Hence, following TAVR, the rate of 30-day stroke in a US registry population was constantly stable during the period between 2011 and 2017.
