Association between serum leptin level and calcific aortic valve disease
Journal of the American Heart Association Oct 06, 2019
Liu Y, Gu Y, Shen Y, et al. - Given a similarity exists in the pathophysiological process of calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) and atherosclerosis, and the process of atherosclerosis is accelerated by leptin, researchers investigated the link between leptin and CAVD by using multiple logistic regression analyses in this study performed on 397 consecutive patients undergoing standard transthoracic echocardiography and Doppler flow imaging. Measurements of serum leptin were taken. Patients with CAVD (n = 200) vs non-CAVD controls (n = 197) exhibited higher serum leptin (median). A positive correlation of leptin with age and its negative correlation with estimated glomerular filtration rate was noted. Findings revealed a link of raised leptin with the presence of CAVD, particularly among younger patients or those with renal dysfunction.
