Association between occupational exposure to pesticides and cardiovascular disease incidence: The Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program
Journal of the American Heart Association Oct 06, 2019
Berg ZK, et al. - Researchers analyzed Japanese-American men (n = 7,557) from the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program in statistical analyses performed with the Occupational Safety Health Administration exposure scale used as an estimate of exposure in order to examine the link between occupational exposure to pesticides and incident cardiovascular disease, defined as coronary heart disease or cerebrovascular accident. The first 10 years observations revealed a positive link between age-adjusted cardiovascular disease incidence and high levels of pesticide exposure. This link continued to be significant following adjustment for other cardiovascular disease risk factors. Experts concluded a possible role of occupational exposure to pesticides in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Since the link between occupational pesticide exposure and cardiovascular disease incidence has never been assessed earlier in this unique cohort, therefore, the observed findings are novel.
