Association between norepinephrine levels and abnormal iron status in patients with chronic heart failure: Is iron deficiency more than a comorbidity?

Journal of the American Heart Association Feb 20, 2019

Moliner P, et al. - In a prospective cohort of 742 chronic heart failure patients (mean age, 72±11 years; 56% male) included in this cross-sectional analysis, researchers assessed serum iron status biomarkers indicating iron storage (ferritin), iron transport (transferrin saturation), and iron demand (soluble transferrin receptor) in relation to plasma norepinephrine levels. The definition of impaired iron status was ferritin <100 μg/L or transferrin saturation <20%. Findings revealed impaired iron status particularly dysregulation of biomarkers in relation to increased sympathetic activation estimated with norepinephrine levels; this suggested impaired iron transport and increased iron demand in chronic heart failure patients.
