Association between industry payments to physicians and device selection in ICD implantation
JAMA Nov 14, 2020
Annapureddy AR, Henien S, Wang Y, et al. - Researchers undertook this cross-sectional analysis to investigate the link between payments from device manufacturers to physicians and device selection for patients receiving first-time implantation of a cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) or cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillator (CRT-D). They selected patients who received a first-time ICD or CRT-D device from any of the 4 major manufacturers (January 1, 2016-December 31, 2018). They joined data from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry ICD Registry with the Open Payments Program’s payment data. Findings revealed that among overall ICD or CRT-D implantations performed, a large proportion was conducted by physicians who received payments from device manufacturers. There was a greater chance of patients receiving ICD or CRT-D devices from the manufacturer that offered the highest total payment to the physician who conducted an ICD or CRT-D implantation vs each other manufacturer individually.
